Professional Fence and Deck Painting Sydney | Outdoor Timber Protection

Sydney's climate is beautiful but tough on outdoor timber. UV radiation, salt air, and seasonal moisture can quickly turn a healthy timber deck or fence into a cracked, splintered eyesore. At Fresh Coat, we restore and protect fences and decks across Sydney using premium stains, sealers, and paints that are specifically formulated for the Australian outdoor environment.

Why Painting or Staining Your Deck and Fence Matters

Untreated timber absorbs moisture, swells, and dries out repeatedly, causing it to crack and warp over time. Regular painting or staining creates a protective barrier that locks out moisture, shields against UV damage, and dramatically extends the life of your outdoor structures. A well-maintained deck and fence also significantly adds to the street appeal and value of your property.

Timber Deck Restoration and Painting

Before any coating is applied, our team carries out a thorough restoration process:

High-Pressure Washing: Removing years of grime, algae, mould, and old flaking product.

Sanding and Screening: Smoothing rough, splintered boards and opening up the grain for better product penetration.

Timber Brightener Treatment: Restoring the natural colour and tone of greyed-out timber before any stain or sealer is applied.

Gap Filling and Minor Repairs: Addressing any loose boards, popped nails, or minor rot before sealing.

Premium Coating Application: Two or more coats of your chosen oil-based stain, water-based sealer, or solid colour deck paint.

Fence Painting Services

Whether your fence is timber palings, hardwood rails, or a prepared Colorbond panel, we have the right product and technique. We handle:

Paling and Picket Fences: Interior and exterior surfaces treated with a premium exterior oil or acrylic product.

Hardwood Feature Fences: Premium penetrating oils that enhance the natural timber grain.

Rendered and Masonry Fence Walls: Exterior-grade acrylic coatings with a smooth or texture finish.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Should I paint or stain my timber deck?

Both options offer strong protection, but the right choice depends on your timber and your aesthetic goals. A penetrating oil stain enhances the natural grain and is ideal for quality hardwoods such as spotted gum or merbau. A solid colour deck paint provides more complete coverage and is a better option for tired or weathered softwood decking. Our team can advise you on the best option for your specific situation.

How often does a Sydney deck need to be repainted or re-stained?

This depends on the product used, the sun exposure, and foot traffic levels. As a general guide, a penetrating oil stain should be re-applied every two to three years, while a solid colour deck paint can last three to five years with good preparation. Decks exposed to full sun and high foot traffic will require more frequent maintenance.

Can you restore a deck that is badly weathered and greying?

Yes. Significant weathering and greying is a surface condition rather than a structural failure in most cases. Our restoration process includes high-pressure washing, sanding, and a timber brightener treatment that can restore the original colour and tone of the timber before a fresh coat of stain or sealer is applied.

What preparation is required before painting a fence?

Good preparation is the most important part of any fence painting project. This includes washing down the fence to remove dirt, mould, and old flaking paint, sanding back any rough surfaces, and applying a quality primer or sealer before the topcoat. Skipping preparation is the most common reason for premature paint failure on outdoor timber.

How long does deck paint or stain take to dry before we can use it again?

Most water-based deck coatings are touch-dry within two to four hours and ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours. Oil-based products generally require 24 to 48 hours before foot traffic is permitted. In cooler or more humid conditions, drying times may be extended. We will always advise you on the specific drying and curing schedule for the product we use on your project.

Do you use non-slip coatings for deck surfaces near pools?

Yes. Anti-slip additives and non-slip deck coatings are available and are strongly recommended for any deck or pathway adjacent to a pool or wet area. We can incorporate a non-slip aggregate into your chosen deck coating to provide traction without compromising the appearance of the finished surface.
