Expert Ceiling Painting Sydney | Flawless Overhead Finishes

Ceilings are one of the most overlooked surfaces in any home, yet a fresh, professionally painted ceiling can make a dramatic difference to the feel of a room. At Fresh Coat, we specialise in ceiling painting across Sydney, handling everything from simple flat white ceilings to intricate ornate cornices, textured plaster, and soaring double-height voids.

Why Your Ceiling Matters More Than You Think

A yellowed, stained, or cracked ceiling makes even the most beautifully decorated room feel tired. Conversely, a bright, well-painted ceiling reflects light, adds height to a space, and sets the tone for everything below it. Whether you are refreshing a single bedroom or preparing your entire home for sale, ceiling painting is one of the highest-value upgrades you can make.

Ceiling Surface Types We Work With

Not all ceilings are the same, and each requires a specific approach:

Smooth Plaster Ceilings: The most common ceiling type in Sydney homes, requiring careful crack filling and sanding before application.

Textured and Stipple Ceilings: Older homes often feature spray-on or hand-applied texture finishes that require specialist rollers and techniques to re-coat evenly.

Ornate Cornice and Plaster Medallions: Heritage and period-style homes in Sydney often feature intricate plasterwork that requires hand-brushing with care to preserve fine detail.

Coffered and Bulkhead Ceilings: Modern homes with architectural ceiling features benefit from a contrasting or complementary colour treatment to highlight the design.

High Void Ceilings: Double-height ceilings require scaffolding or elevated work platforms and are a routine part of our offering.

Preparation and Repair

A flawless ceiling starts with thorough preparation. Our process includes filling and sanding all cracks and imperfections, applying a quality sealer or primer where needed, and ensuring complete adhesion before any topcoat is applied. We also treat any mould or water stain marks with appropriate primers to prevent bleed-through on the finished surface.

Protection and Clean Site Management

Ceiling work creates a real risk of paint drips and overspray. We take this seriously. Our team fully masks and protects all flooring, furniture, and fittings before starting any ceiling work. We use professional-grade dust sheets and plastic sheeting throughout and leave your home spotless at the end of every day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can you repair cracks in my plaster ceiling before painting?

Yes. Minor cracking and hairline cracks are addressed during our preparation phase as a standard part of the service. For more significant structural cracking or sagging plasterboard, we can assess and recommend the appropriate repair approach prior to painting.

What sheen level is best for ceiling paint?

Flat or low-sheen ceiling paint is the standard recommendation for most rooms as it minimises the appearance of surface imperfections and reduces glare. In bathrooms and laundries, a slightly higher sheen such as a low-sheen or semi-gloss may be preferred to better resist moisture and allow for easier cleaning.

How do you prevent paint from dripping onto my floors and furniture?

We use a combination of professional drop sheets, plastic sheeting, and precision masking tape to protect all surfaces below the ceiling. Our painters are experienced in overhead work and use appropriate techniques to minimise drips. Any accidental marks are cleaned up immediately as part of our tidy-as-we-go process.

Can you paint ornate cornices without losing detail?

Absolutely. Ornate plasterwork requires patience and skill. Our painters hand-brush cornices and decorative plaster elements carefully, using the appropriate brush size and paint consistency to fill colour without filling in the fine grooves and raised details that give these features their character.

How long does a standard ceiling painting project take?

A standard single-room ceiling can typically be completed in a half day to a full day, including preparation. Larger projects spanning multiple rooms or involving high voids and ornate plasterwork may take two to three days. We provide a project timeline as part of your quote so you know exactly what to expect.

Do I need to leave the house while the ceiling is being painted?

For most interior ceiling painting projects, it is not necessary to leave the house, though we recommend keeping children and pets away from the work area. We use Low-VOC and Zero-VOC paints where possible to minimise fumes and keep the indoor air quality as clean as possible throughout the process.
